Black History Month began February 1st. In our household black history is celebrated and discussed every day. We make it a point to talk about our history with our daughter quite often, because if we don’t who will. The schools are eliminating so much of the history of our culture and past, that we do not rely on the school system to teach our children.

Black History isn’t just about a month of remembering people that invented great things, or sharing the stories of known slaves. Black History month offers a time to share with others why our history and culture is so beautiful, so bold, and so great. It is a time to share why the stories of slavery are so powerful and relevant today!

Below I’ve  provided a list of some of my families favorite television series and movies. Enjoy the list of movies and TV series, some will make you laugh and other will make you cry. If you intend to watch these with your children be sure to check the age restriction and watch the trailer because some of the content will not be age appropriate and some will require guidance.

We watched Selma with our daughter when she was 11 years old and it sparked conversation and questions. I remember she and I watched 4 Little Girls when she was much younger for a school project. The movie bought on emotions of sadness and anger, but with parental guidance she was able to learn from the events that occurred during that time. I stress the importance of being present with your children while watching some of these documentaries and movie, I hope you enjoy and use this list as a frame of reference throughout the year. Feel free to reach out to me for more movie picks.
